The extended version is considerably better than the orginal and the video and sound make this a worth while Blu-Ray buy.

I love Revolutionary War movies. With Heath Ledger just dying, and he being a favorite in Casanova and Brokeback Mountain (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)I decided to finally watch this 1776 film that seems to always be running on TNT or TBS!
The screenwriter was obviously aware of Williamsburg The Story of A Patriot,Revolution (1985)and Shenandoah(Civil War script),so much so that I knew everything that was going to happen next;not just because I know history, but because THE PATRIOT, in story, has been done before and IMO so much better.John Williams' soundtrack was only average. The direction of Robert Emmerlich was as static and staged as it comes.I found all of the performances to be very "overdone" and predictable as if this was a made-for-television flick; and at 163 minutes of this I am now glad I can say I have seen it,have seen better, and Heath you went on to so much better things. You were too young....We will miss ye!
For all of you who adore this film, start hitting the unhelpful button!

This was purchased as a gift for Christmas. It got there on time and was well received by my son-in-law on Christmas morning.
He has watched it since and tells me that this addition has more enhanced scenes than the original movie. So, if you love action adventure, history and a love story to boot, with some gore, blood and guts thrown in, then you will love this film. Mel Gibson does a great acting job and has a great supporting cast.

The difference in video performance is noticeable (specially if you compare it to and old version DVD, not the upconvert ones...) but the sound improvements is amazing. I have a Sony sound theater and during the battles you can hear sounds coming from everywhere... I was impressed. Besides, I got this movie very cheap, so for a Blu-Ray disc it was a no brainer.

Overall I thought this was an excellent movie with one exception - Gibson just goes overboard with the blood in a few places. I guess he was trying to show that war was bloody even back during the American Revolution, but I think the point could have been made less graphic. However, this is a good, patriotic movie that has some historical basis in American history. Highly recommended for adults, but may be too bloody for kids.
