The direct-to-DVD animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks pits
Superman against two of his longest-running foes: Lex Luthor and the
robotic Brainiac. Luthor's scheme is to re-jigger Brainiac's
configuration using a combination of Superman's DNA and a rare form of
Kryptonite to make him an unstoppable weapon against the Man of Steel.
Fans of TV's Superman: The Animated Series will be pleased to note the
return of Tim Daly and Dana Delany, who reprise their roles as Superman
and Lois Lane from the show, but hardcore Superman/Justice League
Unlimited viewers may regret the loss of Clancy Brown's formidable
performance as Luthor (who is voiced here by Powers Boothe), as well as
Corey Burton as Brainiac (here handled by Lance Henriksen). Also missing
is the series' adherence to its DC Comics origins and its serious tone,
which here is blunted by Duane (The Batman, Jackie Chan Adventures)
Capizzi's frothy script, which hews closer to a combination of the
Superman films and broad comedy. --Paul Gaita

The Scoop
Superman: Brainiac Attacks is a direct-to-video
animated film from Warner Bros. Animation released on June 20, 2006. It
aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami block three days before release on
June 17, 2006.It was released on DVD as a tie-in with the live-action
Superman Returns. It also aired on Toon Disney on June 16, 2008, being
the first Superman film to air on Toon Disney.
The film features Superman battling the combined forces of Lex Luthor
and Brainiac. It also focuses on the relationship between Superman and
Lois Lane.
The film's visual style is the same as Superman: The Animated Series but
it is not set in the same continuity. Superman: TAS alumni Tim Daly and
Dana Delany are reunited to voice the characters of Superman and Lois
Lane. This is the first time that Daly has returned to the Superman role
since the 2002 video game Superman: Shadow of Apokolips, as he was not
part of the cast of the Justice League animated series where the part of
Superman was played by George Newbern. Clancy Brown and Corey Burton,
who voiced Lex Luthor and Brainiac in the animated series, Justice
League and Justice League Unlimited are noticeably absent in the cast of
the movie. Powers Boothe and Lance Henriksen instead provided the voices
of Luthor and Brainiac, respectively.

The description from the back of the DVD jacket says:
"Embittered by Superman's heroic successes and soaring popularity, Lex
Luthor forms a dangerous alliance with the powerful computer/villain
Brainiac. Using advanced weaponry and a special strain of Kryptonite
harvested from the far reaches of outer space, Luthor specifically
redesigns Brainiac to defeat the Man of Steel. But when Brainiac betrays
Luthor and reveals its sinister plans for world domination, Superman
must brave the mysterious Phantom Zone to find the strength to survive
this deadly showdown."
As the movie was intended primarily
as part of the promotional package for Superman Returns, and not for the
DCAU as a whole, it contains significant differences in continuity from
the Justice League Unlimited series. This movie contains some elements
in common with Superman: The Animated Series, but does not form a part
of the DCAU. Duane Capizzi said he simply borrowed the designs of the
DCAU but never intended it to be in any continuity |
